My Work

  •

KEEPING THE DOOR OPEN: DIALOGUES ON DRUG USE (KDO)

KDO was a coalition of organisations and individuals promoting harm reduction policies and reducing stigma for people who use drugs. As project director, I organised public education dialogues and introduced new innovations from other jurisdictions.

  •

INSITE: NORTH AMERICA’S FIRST SUPERVISED INJECTION SITE

A long-time supporter of INSITE, I was an outspoken community speaker on behalf of the campaign to keep the facility open, eventually resulting in INSITE being sanctioned by the Supreme Court of Canada in 2011.

  •

    SAFEGAMES2010

I brought SafeGames2010 to the Vancouver Winter Olympics to introduce harm reduction into the mainstream. Teams of over 200 outreach workers and ‘superheroes’ distributed SafeKits with tips on safe sex and other practical information.

  •

CANADIAN SCHOOL OF PUBLIC SERVICE: DIREXION PROGRAM

As a regional coordinator, I design comprehensive week-long programs for Direxion Program participants. Public service managers from across Canada attended learning tours of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside to better understand this community in transition.

  •

INTERNATIONAL HARM REDUCTION DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM (OPEN SOCIETY FOUNDATIONS)

With the Open Society Foundation and CIDA, I designed tours for policy makers, healthcare providers, enforcement officials and NGO’s from Russia, Georgia and the Ukraine who came to learn from Vancouver’s expertise in harm reduction.

  •

    INTEGRATION COACHING

I have worked with a broad spectrum of people to help them discover their passion, and who they are in the world. Manifesting their essence has contributed to their personal well being, their relationships, families and communities.

  •

    KEYNOTE SPEAKING

    Concordia HIV/AIDS Project

In 2008, Concordia University invited me to speak about the history of HIV/AIDS in Vancouver, the introduction of harm reduction policies, and the struggles we faced in opening INSITE.

At the end of the talk someone from the audience asked the Dalai Lama, "Why didn't you fight back against the Chinese?" The Dalai Lama looked down, swung his feet just a bit, then looked back up at us and said with a gentle smile, "Well, war is obsolete, you know." Then, after a few moments, his face grave, he said, "Of course the mind can rationalise fighting back... but the heart, the heart would never understand. Then you would be divided in yourself, the heart and the mind, and the war would be inside you."
